Cath Lab Nurse: Cardiac Catheterization Lab
Nurses will care for heart attack and heart disease patients; assisting with procedures such as cardiac cauterizations, pacemakers, defibrillation placement and many other interventional procedures. Nurses must be able to manage patient status change and emergency situations and work well as a team. This is a dynamic specialty and nurses must stay up on the latest techniques and be capable of educating patients of these procedures.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a critical care course.
ER Nurse: Emergency Room
Nurses will care for patients with various illnesses or traumas that require emergency attention. Nurses must be able to recognize and treat life-threatening conditions and be experienced in rapid assessment and treatment for patients. They must be ready and able to treat these wide varieties of illnesses and traumas—anywhere from fevers to heart attacks—to people of all ages.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the emergency room and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certifications consist of TNCC, PALS and CPI.
L&D (LDRP) Nurse: Labor and Delivery
Nurses will provide care to women and their newborns throughout antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal stages. They will support and monitor mothers and their babies during birth and deal with any potential problems that may arise. Nurses may also provide support and education after birth to families.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in labor and delivery, with the ability to scrub C-section, and must uphold the mandatory BCLS, NRP and Fetal Monitor Course certifications. Preferred certification consists of a critical care course or TCU course.
Rehab Nurse: Acute Rehabilitation
Nurses care for patients with temporary, progressive or permanent illnesses or disabilities that require rehabilitation. They assess and assist in designing a plan of care that is right for the patients’ needs and will allow them to adapt and recover efficiently. Nurses also provide support and educate their patients through this recovery process by helping them set goals for their recovery, encouraging self-care and teaching coping skills. Nurses will also be working as a part of a team of healthcare providers such as occupational and physical therapists, physicians and pharmacists.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current experience in med-surg or acute rehab and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred rehab experience.
CVICU Nurse: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
Nurses will care for post-operative cardiac patients, who require constant observation, high alert nursing care and the use of specialized intensive care equipment. Common illnesses cared for include congenital heart disease or anomalies, acquired heart disease and heart transplants, along with the care for patients on extracorporeal life support systems.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current experience in CVICU and balloon pumps, and must uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certifications consist of Swans and Hemodynamic Monitoring.
PCU Nurse: Step Down (Progressive Care Unit)
Nurses will care for patients that are not unstable enough to require ICU care, but still must have closer monitoring and more frequent assessments. PCU and telemetry nurses employ computer equipment to monitor cardiac and other vital information, and are able to detect changes and enable interventions before a life-threatening situation occurs.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a critical care course.
Endoscopy Nurse: Operating Room/OR
Nurses provide care to patients with gastrointestinal problems during investigative or therapeutic procedures. They assist physicians performing the procedures and help to maintain specialized equipment. They also monitor the patient’s status to ensure safety and address discomfort.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a conscious sedation course.
CCU Nurse: Critical Care Unit
Nurses provide care for acutely ill individuals and practice within settings where patients require complex assessments, high-intensity therapies and interventions, as well as continuous nursing vigilance. American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), states that this specialty within nursing deals specifically with human responses to life-threatening problems and the nurses rely on a specialized body of knowledge, experience and skills to provide the care that is needed for these patients and families.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a critical care course.
Home Care Nurse: Home Health or Hospice
Nurses provide care for patients at their residences and have a variety of responsibilities that include administering medications, wound care, education on disease treatment and prevention, and preforming patient assessments.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current home health or hospice experience with no private duty, and must uphold the mandatory BCLS certification.
LTAC Nurse: Long Term Acute Care
Nurses provide medical, psychosocial and personal care on a recurring or continual basis to patients suffering from chronic physical or mental disorders. Experience working in a medical surgical setting is required for this specialty, as well as the ability to prepare IVs, ventilators and tube feeding.
M/S Nurse: Bariatric or Med-Surg
Nurses provide care for all adult patients in hospitals. These nurses may have to care for larger numbers of patients as well as deal with a wider variety of patient conditions.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current telemetry and/or med-surg experience, and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification consists of ACLS.
PACU Nurse: Post Anesthetic Care
Nurses provide care for patients recovering from anesthesia—general, regional or local. Nurses monitor vital signs and treat patients according to their needs. Typically these nurses only monitor their patients for a few hours until they have reached a stat of responsiveness, then nurses will prepare them for discharge or transfer to another department in the hospital.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of PALS.
SICU Nurse: Surgical Intensive Care Unit
Nurses are responsible for accurately assessing each patient on a continual basis in order to determine the patient’s response to medical and nursing interventions. They evaluate the need to administer medications such as vasoactive agents, oxygen and others. Due to surgery possibly causing physical, emotional and psychological stress these nurses must be sensitive, aware and able to meet the psychological needs of the patient and family.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a critical care course.
PICU Nurse: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The PICU RN is responsible for managing the care of an infant or child experiencing life-threatening problems that require complex assessment, high intensity therapies and interventions, and continuous nursing vigilance.
ICU Nurse: Intensive Care Unit
The nurse is responsible for managing the care of patients experiencing life-threatening problems that require complex assessment, high intensity therapies and interventions, and continuous nursing vigilance.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current critical care experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a critical care course.
TCU Nurse: Telemetry/MS
Nurses provide care for patients by comfortably connecting them to machines that measure blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, blood-oxygen level and electrocardiogram information. This information is sent to a remote location where nurses may closely monitor the patient. The nurse interprets this information, assesses the patients’ health problems and needs, develops nursing care plans and maintains accurate medical records.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current TELE/TCU experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification consists of a TELE course.
Ambulatory Care Nurse: Outpatient Surgery
Nurses provide treatment for patients of all ages that have acute or chronic illnesses or injuries on an episodic, outpatient basis within many different settings. An emphasis is put on preventive care, pain management and education to keep the injuries or illnesses healthy and independent. Nurses provide screenings, triage, patient education, pain management, case management, discharge plans and other interventions to restore and maintain patients’ physical health.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current clinic experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certifications. Preferred outpatient experience.
CVOR Nurse: Cardiovascular Operating Room
Nurses provide care to cardiovascular patients, assist with surgical procedures, and provide coordination of care, clinical problem solving and quality monitoring.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current CVOR, balloon pumps experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certifications consist of CORN and experience with balloon pumps.
Dialysis Nurse:
Nurses provide care for patients undergoing dialysis procedures and deliver nursing care as well as education for the patients and their families.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current dialysis experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification consists of an ACLS certification.
Hospice Nurse: Hospice and Palliative Care
Nurses provide care and pain relief to patients who are in their final stages of life. These nurses supply the highest quality of life to the patient by effectively managing pain and other symptoms fused with compassionate listening and counseling skills. They work in collaboration with physicians, social workers, chaplains, and others in order to anticipate and meet the needs of the patient and his or her family, and to ensure the delivery of culturally sensitive care.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current home health or hospice experience, with no private duty, and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification.
NICU Nurse: Neonatal Intensive Care unit
Nurses provide care for newborns that need close monitoring or specialized care due to premature birth, infection, birth defects or other medical conditions that require surgeries or therapies. They will provide direct care to these infants, who require high-technology care, including ventilators or other special equipment, incubators or surgery. The nurses work together with doctors and other healthcare professionals to develop a plan of care for high-risk newborns.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current NICU experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS, NRP/NALS certification. Preferred certification consists of an NICU course.
Occ Health Nurse: Occupational Health
Nurses provide health and safety programs and services to workers, worker populations and community groups. These nurses focus on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from work related and environmental hazards. They will perform annual employee physical exams to ensure that workers are remaining healthy on the job, and treat and provide case management on any injuries that occur during the workday. Nurses maintain the workman’s compensation and OSHA records, as well as conducting environmental inspections for health hazards to ensure a safe workplace. They will also perform drug screens, immunizations, employee counseling and education, as well as maintain employee medical records.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current occupational medicine and triage experience, and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification in occupational health nursing.
Oncology Nurse: Oncology
Nurses provide care for cancer patients at all stages of their disease. They help these patients manage their diseases and treatments effectively and may also administer chemotherapy.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current oncology experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and chemo certification. Preferred certification consists of an oncology certification.
Ortho Nurse: Orthopedics
Nurses provide care for patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system. This may include care for patients suffering from minor fractures, multiple fractures received from a vehicle accident, or chronic bone and joint diseases. These nurses have the opportunity to gain expertise in fracture management, wound care, management of acute and chronic pain, complex infusions, medical and surgical emergencies, and counseling.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current orthopedics/med-surg experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification consists of an ortho certification.
Peds Nurse: Pediatrics
Nurses provide comprehensive care to children and adolescents usually up to age 18. They deliver nursing care for children with a wide range of acute and chronic medical and surgical conditions. Pediatric nurses specialize in providing age-appropriate care to their patients and acknowledge the expertise of the family and collaborate with them to provide care for the child. They promote healthful practices and disease prevention and provide nursing care for patients with physical and mental disabilities, and acute and chronic illnesses.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current pediatrics experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification for PALS.
Psychology/Behavioral Health Nurse: Psychiatrics General or Geriatric
Nurses provide mental health care to patients. They work with individuals, families, groups and communities to assess mental health needs, develop diagnoses and plan, implement and evaluate nursing care. They will assess dysfunction, help clients to regain or improve their coping abilities and prevent further disability. Nurses also provide education and prevention management, perform crisis intervention and counseling, and assist clients with self-care activities and management of psychobiological treatment regimens.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current psych experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention course certifications.
Post-Partum Nurse: Post-Partum OB/GYN
Nurses provide care for women after delivery and may also care for the newborn. They monitor the woman to ensure she is recovering properly, both physically and emotionally. These nurses are trained to recognize postpartum depression and can help the mother deal effectively with her emotions. Nurses will also educate new mothers and fathers on how to care for their infant, including instructions on breastfeeding or bottle feeding, bathing, and monitoring the infant’s health and well being.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current postpartum required, med-surg experience, and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification for NRP.
OR Nurse: Operating Room Circulator/Scrub (Perioperative)
Nurses provide care for patients with surgical needs by assessing, planning and implementing the care that patients receive preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively. They perform patient assessments, create and maintain sterile and safe environments, give preoperative and postoperative teachings, monitor physiologic and psychological statuses, integrate and coordinate care across settings and among disciplines, and provide patient advocacy and efficient provision of resources.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current OR circulator experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification for CORN.
Case Manager Nurse:
Nurses coordinate long-term care for patients, with a goal to treat their patients at optimal times to keep them healthy and out of the hospital. They will also research the latest treatments and procedures, and work with insurance companies to help patients receive the best possible care in the most cost effective way. These nurses may specialize in treatment for a variety of patients with certain diseases or age groups.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current experience as a RN and one year as a case manager, along with case/resource management or utilization review experience. Nurses must also uphold the mandatory BCLS certification.
First Assist Nurse:
Nurses provide care for patients during the entire period before a surgery. They have to perform different duties, which include collaboration with other healthcare providers that the patient needs. The nurse is in charge of organizing prescripts as told according to the operating surgeon. The nurse may also run tests, suture or administer medications and be in charge of other small surgical procedures.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current surgical first assistant experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred ACLS certification, certification as a first assistant and a specialty course for area of specialty.
Mother/Baby Nurse:
Nurses provide care for mothers and their babies, mostly in the post-partum stage, forming a unity with complex interdependent needs. They must confront the baby’s behavior in relationship with his or her mother and also the mother’s behavior in relationship with her baby and her birthing experience. Nurses must be prepared to face the possibility of post-partum depression and have a keen sense of how the communication is established between the mother and the baby. They should help the bonding between them, and skip skin-to-skin contact.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in med-surg and mother/baby, and must uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification consists of NALS.
Hemodialysis Nurse:
Nurses provide care to patients suffering from kidney failure and undergoing hemodialysis treatments. Nurses start the actual process, perform it and constantly keep the patient and equipment under strict supervision to ensure everything runs as planned.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current dialysis/hemodialysis experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification consists of an ACLS certification.
CST: Certified Scrub Tech
Scrub techs aid surgeons and surgical nurses in preparing for and performing surgeries. They will set up the operating room with the proper instruments for the procedure, help prep patients and monitor their vitals, and pass surgical tools and supplies to the surgeon during the operation. They must have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. CST’s must have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and constantly be vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Must have a minimum of one year of experience and knowledge of sterile techniques, instrument identification, surgical procedures and equipment. Nurses also must uphold the mandatory CRCST certification or equivalent certification program. Preferred 2 to 3 years related experience.
CVOR Tech:
CVOR techs aid surgeons and surgical nurses in preparing for and performing open-heart or cardiac surgeries. They will set up the operating room with the proper instruments for the procedure, help prep patients and monitor their vitals, and pass surgical tools and supplies to the surgeon during the operation. They must have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
Must have a minimum of one year of experience as a CVOR tech and knowledge of sterile techniques, instrument identification, surgical procedures and equipment, and must uphold the mandatory CRCST certification or equivalent certification program. Preferred 2 to 3 years related experience.
ED Obs: Emergency Room Observation
Nurses provide care for patients of all ages who are not ill enough to warrant immediate inpatient hospital admission but are not well enough to return to their place of residence and would benefit from an extended observation period (usually less than 24 hours). These nurses provide patients with additional monitoring, diagnostic evaluations and/or treatment prior to disposition. Some common conditions for patients placed in these units are chest pain, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, asthma, back pain, dehydration, gastroenteritis and trauma.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in ER or TELE and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certifications consist of critical care or TCU courses.
Nursery: Newborn Nursery
Nurses provide medical care for newborns and infants. These nurses provide specific care immediately after birth. They vaccinate the newborn, monitor the vital functions of the premature newborns, take samples for the laboratory tests, perform procedures and treatments needed, and are responsible for identification of the mother and her newborn. The nurses prepare and explain the new techniques of breastfeeding, toileting and more. Nurses must respond promptly to the needs of the newborns and report any infection or changes in the evolution.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in newborn nursery and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certification consists of NRP/NALS.
Infection Control Nurse:
Nurses help prevent patient infections in hospitals and clinics. They study the patient’s bacteria to identify any infections that may have resulted for the patient’s health care, and instruct other nurses or healthcare staff on proper sanitation procedures needed.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current infection control experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification.
Infusion Nurse:
Nurses provide patients with medication and fluids via injection. They monitor patients and their tubing, maintain arterial catheters and stay aware of potential drug complications.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current infusion experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification. Preferred certifications consist of a chemo certification.
Radiology Nurse:
Nurses provide care for patients undergoing radiation treatments, ultrasounds, MRI’s or receiving radiation therapy for cancer. They make sure patients are mentally and emotionally prepared to undergo the medical procedures. Nurses are constantly being exposed to new and innovative medical equipment and must stay on top of this information and training.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current radiation experience and uphold the mandatory BCLS certification.
Neuro/Trauma Intensive Care Unit
Nurses provide care for patients with all types of neurosurgical and neurological injuries; including stroke, brain hemorrhaging, trauma and tumors. They supply these patients with complex assessments, high intensity therapies and interventions, and continuous nursing vigilance.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in neuro/trauma ICU and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications.
MICU: Medical Intensive Care Unit
Nurses provide intensive care for patients with complex and multi-system medical illnesses. They focus on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, evaluation and monitoring of the critically ill patients.
Must have a minimum of 2 years of current experience in critical care and uphold the mandatory BCLS and ACLS certifications. Preferred certification in a critical care course.
Wound:
Wound and Ostomy nurses care for patients with wounds caused by medical treatments, diseases, or injuries. Nurses will also provide post-surgery treatments and care for patients with ostomies. These nurses often work with a healthcare team that assesses patients, manages wounds and monitors healing. Nurses work to prevent bedsores, help ulcers, abscesses and feeding tube sites to heal quickly, clean wounds and develop wound care treatment plans.
Pharmacist:
Pharmacists are in charge of all the medications dispensed in a hospital. They are experts in the use and safety of medications that work alongside with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. They advise doctors in determining the best possible treatment for specific diseases and make sure that patients understand medications and any side effects or drug interactions. Pharmacists educate patients on medication use, side effects and restrictions on diet and over the counter medications.
Pharmacy Tech:
Pharmacy techs assist pharmacists in their daily tasks. They work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and other healthcare providers. They perform tasks related to the preparing and dispensing pharmaceutical drugs, as well as performing clerical duties.
Pre-op:
Pre-op nurses care for patients prior to surgery. They administer pre-surgery medications if necessary, evaluate and access admission documents, identify emergency procedures and adhere to necessary pre-op policies and procedures.
Medical Social Worker:
Medical Social Workers assist patients in need of psychosocial assistance. They provide patients and families with sound advice about their health conditions and connect them with the appropriate resources and support, such as, psychotherapy, counseling, financial support, and legal assistance. They collaborate with other healthcare teams in assessing the patients to determine if it is medically necessary for patients to continue their stay at a hospital, so patients can leave in a timely manner. They will formulate discharge plans for the patients who are ready to go home.
Occupational Therapist:
Occupational therapists assist patients with physical, mental and social disabilities to live normal lives and carry out daily activities independently. They understand the needs of each of their patients in order to develop a specific treatment plan suitable for them.
Physical Therapist:
Occupational therapists assist patients with physical, mental and social disabilities to live normal lives and carry out daily activities independently. They understand the needs of each of their patients in order to develop a specific treatment plan suitable for them.
Respiratory Therapist:
Respiratory therapists treat patients who have breathing or cardiopulmonary problems, including patients such as, premature infants, or children and adults with lung diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and COPD. They will examine patients and upon consultation from a physician will develop a treatment plan. They also deliver emergency care to heart attack patients, drowning victims or patients in shock.

Cardiovascular techs use imaging technology to help physicians diagnose cardiac and peripheral vascular ailments in patients. They also assist physicians treat problems with cardiac and vascular systems, such as blood clots.
Certified Medical Coder:
Certified Medical Coders are responsible for inputting the appropriate code of various medical services so that healthcare practitioners and providers can receive payment for their services rendered. Specific codes they assign are used to establish the amount of money a healthcare provider will get reimbursed from the different insurance companies. Medical Coders are required certifications in this field, such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Accredited Record Technicians Certification (ART).

Diagnostic Techs assist physicians in gathering sonographic data. They obtain, review and integrate pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results. They perform appropriate procedures and record anatomical, pathological or physiological data for the physician to interpret. They record and process data collected along with observations made during. Diagnostic Techs provide patient education related to the ultrasound and promote principles of good health.
